Ohio Extends Income Tax Filing and Payment Deadlines

On March 27, 2020, Ohio Tax Commissioner Jeff McClain announced that Ohio will follow the federal government and extend the deadline to file and pay Ohio income tax, in response to the Coronavirus pandemic and national quarantine. The new deadline is July 15, which mirrors the automatic extension given by the IRS for federal returns.  This extension is available to those taxpayers filing Ohio individual income tax returns, school district income taxes, pass-through entity taxes, and those taxpayers that have opted to have the municipal net profits tax administrated through the state’s centralized filing system.  Ohio is waiving penalty and interest during the extension period.

Individuals, estates, trusts and certain businesses making quarterly estimated income tax payments have been granted an extension as well, both to file and pay, without penalty or interest.  The first and second quarterly estimated payments normally due on April and June 15 have been extended to July 15.  Additional guidance from the Ohio Department of Taxation is anticipated in the coming week.

All municipal income tax returns will be subject to Ohio’s extension.
