We would like to congratulate Michael D. Makofsky for being named one of Northeast Ohio's Forty under Forty for 2011 by Crain's Cleveland Business. Each year, Crain's, Northeast Ohio's leading source for weekly business news, analysis and commentary, acknowledges the top forty young professionals under forty years of age throughout Northeast Ohio. These professionals are those who have shown themselves to be an integral part of Northeast Ohio's business community.
Congratulations to Ann-Marie Ahern and Ellen S. Simon for their $900,000 verdict in the Gloria Parks v. University Hospitals employment discrimination lawsuit. The lawsuit alleged that Parks, a medical assistant, was discriminated against because of her age when she was terminated from her job of 30 years in July of 2008. The seven day trial in the courtroom of Judge Carolyn Friedland found that age was a determining factor in Ms. Parks' termination. Parks was awarded $450,000 for her economic loss and $450,000 for other compensatory damages.
Congratulations to Partner Christian R. Patno for being named in the 2011 Top 100 Ohio Super Lawyers list for the fifth year in a row.

McCarthy, our Founding Senior Principal, has been named the Jewish Community Federation of Cleveland's Face of the Month. The Face of the Month spotlights the work of the Federation through the people we are helping in Cleveland, Israel and around the world, and through the faces of those who are working with us to make the world a better place.
As a Silver Circle member, one who has been making a gift to the Campaign for Jewish Needs for over 25 years, Dan became aware of the Federation's Public Education Initiative (PEI), a literacy program serving students in the Cleveland Metropolitan School District. Approximately 175 dedicated PEI volunteers tutor over 300 students at seven sites in the City of Cleveland including the Juvenile Detention Center. During the last school year, almost half of the students who worked with PEI tutors raised their reading skills by more than one level.
The success of the PEI program inspired Dan to become more involved. He was instrumental in facilitating a grant from his law firm's McCarthy, Lebit, Crystal, Liffman Foundation to PEI through the Federation's corporate sponsorship program. This grant has enabled the Federation to expand the PEI program to the newest site at Ginn Academy. In addition, he has also helped enhance relationships with administrators at existing PEI sites.
