Noted Employment Litigation Attorneys

Our principal employment litigation attorney, Ann-Marie Ahern, has devoted her career exclusively to employment law. She and our other lawyers in the employment law practice are results-oriented advocates. When appropriate, we work to resolve matters quickly and efficiently. But when the circumstances necessitate going to trial, we call on our years of courtroom experience and advocacy, and will not hesitate to take a case to trial. Ann-Marie Ahern has been involved in many verdicts in excess of one million dollars, including a $30 million verdict on behalf of a single age discrimination victim. Ahern routinely resolves employment cases through settlements involving hundreds of thousands of dollars.

We have the resources to take on employment disputes involving large damage amounts caused by wrongful discharge, denial of promotion, or wrongful demotion. Our firm frequently represents victims of age discrimination who have been forced out due to their age or through a reduction in force. We also represent employees who have been the victim of retaliation for reporting illegal conduct or discrimination in the workplace. We represent victims of gender and sex discrimination, including "glass ceiling" cases and hostile work environment sexual harassment cases. Our firm capably handles matters involving disability discrimination, including failure to accommodate a disability, race discrimination, religious discrimination, and national origin discrimination. When employers have misclassified employees or have failed to properly pay overtime wages, we represent employees in Fair Labor Standards Act cases. We also represent whistleblowers when they experience retaliation for "doing the right thing." We litigate employment cases throughout the State of Ohio in both state and federal courts, and before the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. We routinely prevail in cases involving violations of the Ohio employment non-discrimination and retaliation law, as well as cases involving Title VII, the Age Discrimination and Employment Act, and the Americans with Disabilities Act. We understand that the loss of a job is a stressful and often economically devastating experience. Our attorneys have the expertise required to take on companies of any size and hold them accountable for illegal employment decisions. We provide a personal level of service at every juncture, so that our clients feel confident that their matters are of utmost importance.

Our employment law practice also represents terminated employees in severance negotiations and review of severance packages. We understand the uncertainty facing those who are newly unemployed and the importance of achieving the maximum possible severance payment to ease the financial burdens that result from an unplanned separation from employment. Our work on behalf of employees in this area includes representations of executives in negotiating their separation plans, as well as negotiation and counseling as to non-compete agreements.

In addition to advocating on behalf of employees in litigation, we also advise our corporate clients on the full spectrum of employment disputes. We assist clients in managing difficult employment situations in a way that complies with the myriad of employment laws, and in drafting employment policies and handbooks. We serve as trusted advisors in helping our corporate clients avoid missteps in the employment process that can lead to costly litigation. We also litigate on behalf of corporate clients in matters involving a broad range of employment litigation, including discrimination, harassment and non-competition issues.

The experience of our unique team of professionals, who understand litigation from both the employee's perspective and the employer's perspective, enables us to provide a superior level of performance and results for our clients. Unlike many firms that limit their practice to employment law, we can and do call on the expertise of our other practice groups when employment matters implicate taxation or corporate issues, or when our results on behalf of our clients require estate planning consultation.
